Days and Weeks

Here is some information to refresh the memories of those who served in Ningxia last summer and to help others with background information. We certainly aren't bound to what we did in the past. However, we might want to use the 2008 schedule as a starting point. It seemed to work. We did our best to keep everything interactive.

From Monday through Friday this was how our days looked. We ended at noon on Saturday.

  • 6:30 Team time followed by breakfast
  • 8:00-9:00 Morning class I ( with teachers in classrooms)
  • 9:15-10:15 Morning class II
  • 10:30-11:30 Morning class III
  • 11:30 Lunch
  • 2:30-3:30 Large group sessions with all students: Culture or Methodology sessions
  • 3:45-4:45 In classrooms with teachers; follow-up sessions/discussions, special activities, one-on-one, discussions, learning activities, etc.
  • 5:30 Dinner
  • Evening informal interactions, preparation, visiting in dorms, discussions, free time

Let's comment/discuss how we want to modify this for 2009.
Ideas?
Suggestions?
Modifications?

  1. 6:30 am oh my, for an old retired lady this is scary. However, for love of Ningxia I'll happily rise at any hour :)

  2. Hello from Guyuan. Since this year all the trainees will not be housed in dorms and will be commuting from home (from what I understand) how do you think this will affect the informal interactions in the evenings and such? I have to assume it will. We might want to think about finding another block of time during the day to spend informal time with the teachers. Just a thought.

  3. I'm with Jene on the 6:30! But I, too, can rise to the occasion. At least the sun will be up, too! I also agree with Patrick. Could we have the afternoon blocks of time for talking with students and make some of the culture events in the evenings? I'm sure there would be a variety of ways to do it so that the teachers can attend. Has this been the case in the past...that they go home in the evenings?

  5. Hi Patrick and group,
Welcome from Pennsylvania. Don't any of our students live in the city? By the way, will we have roomies or separate facilities?

  6. Mary, we will find the answer to that question, later, probably in July.

  7. This is last year's schedule. We can create a new one for 2009. If we want we can shift things to the evening if that works for the students.

  8. I like to use evenings for program stuff in addition to mornings and afternoons. In other locations where I have been, when students commute from home, we can't use evenings for scheduled programs and classes. They don't/can't make two trips to campus. That forces everything into mornings and afternoons. The up-side of that is that teachers are often invited into homes and can spend evenings with families and even neighbors.

  9. When I was at a commuter site we shortened the noon break, the students were fine with that as they had no place to xiuxi anyhow. That gave us a block of time at the end of the to do one on one's and stuff like that
